Platteville is one of the oldest communities in Weld County, Colorado. Historically serving as hunting grounds of nomad tribes and Cheyenne Indians, Platteville was an established fur trading post known as Fort Vasquez in the 1830s. Development of the Town of Platteville, named after Colorado’s South Platte River, started in 1871 along the Denver and Pacific Railroad line. Platteville has a rich history including fascinating historical figures such as “Rattlesnake Kate,” who killed over 200 rattlesnakes and proceeded to make a dress from their skins. Her dress can still be viewed at the Greeley Museum.
Today Platteville remains a small community located 26 miles outside of Longmont, providing residents with miles of picturesque landscape and farmland, and quaint small-town living.

In terms of higher education, Platteville is within an hour of prestigious universities in Northern Colorado such as Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado, and Denver universities including University of Colorado Denver, and University of Denver.
Residents of Platteville have access to the Weld County Public Hospital in town and access to larger health care facilities such as the Banner Health North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and Longmont’s United Hospital – both of which offer access to all health care specialties.
While Platteville is still largely an agrarian community, its location makes it perfect for an easy commute to larger cities including Longmont, Greeley, Fort Collins, and Denver. Significant employers include JBS USA, Leprino Foods, and University of Northern Colorado in Greeley; Woodward, Anheuser-Busch, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, and Vestas, Metal Container Corp. and OI in Windsor. Weld RE-1 School District is one of the largest employers in Platteville.
